Despite all the controversy around Mel Gibson, he can apparently still draw the crowds.
Just a few months ago, fans were shaking their heads in dismay at comments made by Mel Gibson during an arrest for DWI. Gibson reportedly let the booze speak for him while being arrested back in July for driving while intoxicated. Dropping the F-bomb and spewing anti-semitic statements, fans were horrified that their sexy Lethal Weapon star had truly sunk so low.
But on its opening weekend, Gibson's newest movie Apocalypto debuted at number one, leaving no doubt that our beloved Mel still has a home in Hollywood.
And its not as if Mel didn't already have his work cut out for him.
The story of an ancient Mayan empire, Apocalypto tells the tale of a battle between you everyday 500 year old tribal village and its brutal rivals. When the rival tribe invades the village, many are killed - sacrificed in front of an excited crowd. But just before our hero Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) is put to death, he escapes.
Now the race is on to evade his captors and save his pregnant wife and young son who are hiding in a cave.
Apocalypto is violent, graphic and full of images to keep you up at night - just what you'd expect from the genius behind Braveheart and Passion of the Christ. And though the entire story is told in subtitles and you'll find no blockbuster celebrities on the film, you'll have to admit:
Gibson still has it when it comes to making masterpieces, personal demons or not.
