Top Grossing Movies of the Year

What movies blew the box office away in 2006?

Hollywood has been busy this year, producing flops, gems and everything in between. Which ones made the most money? According to gross receipts as reported on the IMDb website, here they are:

1. Pirates of the Carribean ($423,032,628) - Jack is back and grossing just over $400 million with Dead Man's Chest (compared to $305 million for its 2003 predecessor). In part 2, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) discovers he owes a blood debt to Davy Jones and once again, enlists the help of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) to get him out of his latest mess. Rated PG-13, Pirates 2 hit your DVD shelves on December 5, 2006.

2. Cars ($244,052,771) - This fun CGI movie features the voices of Owen Wilson (Lightning McQueen), Paul Newman (Doc Hudson) and Michael Keaton (Chick Hicks) to name just a notable few. Our story begins with Lightning McQueen, an arrogant and self-absorbed race car who thinks that life is all about getting to the finish line. The point of the movie of course, is to prove him wrong and after an unexpected detour, McQueen slowly learns to appreciate the journey. Rated "G" for everyone, Cars hit the DVD shelves on November 7, 2006.

3. X-Men: The Last Stand ($234,360,014) - You ARE an X-Men fan, aren't you?! With Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart (okay, I'll admit it... I have a thing for Captain Picard...is my trekkie showing?), X-Men III is just as action-packed as 1 and 2. When the government creates a "cure" for mutation, the country becomes even more divided. Should mutants be accepted for who they are or should the government force them to take the shot? And what about the mutants who just want a normal life? Of course, Magneto has a strong opinion and with his henchmen followers, its not long before war breaks out. And did I mention that Jean Grey returns? Only, she's not quite right in the head...

4. Night at the Museum ($225,001,335) - Featuring the funny Ben Stiller, a newbie security guard discovers that an ancient curse brings the animals and exhibits to life at the Museum of Natural History. Watch this one and you'll also see Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Robin Williams.

5. The Da Vinci Code ($217,536,138) - Starring Tom Hanks, this is an adaptation of the book by the same name. Personally, I tend to prefer the book to the movie, but I liked this one. Hanks plays a professor who gets sucked into an age-old battle between a secret society and the Catholic Church.
