On Tuesday, December 26, 2006, former President Gerald R. Ford, Jr., passed away in his California home. He was 93, making him the oldest living president to date.
And although Ford is probably most remembered for granting a pardon to ex-President Richard Nixon for his role in the Watergate scandal, what many people don't know is that other than his seat in the House of Representatives, Gerald Ford never ran for the offices he held.
When then Vice-President Spiro Agnew resigned in 1973, Nixon nominated Ford as the new VP. He was quickly confirmed under the 25th Amendment by both the House and the Senate and then in just one year later, Nixon chose to resign rather than face impeachment, putting Gerald Ford at the helm of the White House.
Ford spent just 2 1/2 years in the White House but managed to bring about tremendous change. To learn more about our 38th President, read Gerald Ford Jr's profile: A Look into the Life of Our 38th President.
