Just 56 days after a court convicted him for his role in the killings of 158 Shiite Muslims, 69 year-old Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging.
According to an article from the Associated Press, Hussein requested that his Quran be given to a man he called "Bander" and was composed during his walk to the execution room.
Perhaps one of the most infamous dictators in recent history, Saddam Hussein was widely known for his brutal temperment and numerous human rights violations. Having already been found guilty on the murder charges for the 148 Shiites, Saddam was in the middle of a second trial for his role in a 1987-88 attack that caused the death of an estimated 180,000 Kurds.
The execution came at the start of Eid al-Adha, an Islamic holiday marking the end of the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.
